This piece is inspired by Maya Hawke’s “Coverage,” and explores the line between fantasy and reality, as well as the idea of authenticity. Sometimes we don’t always present our whole, genuine selves to the people around us and instead “twist” who we really are to appeal to different people, often losing ourselves in the process. My favorite lyric from the song, and the one I drew the most inspiration from, is the second one. I chose to wrap the beaded wire around the entire piece to represent the “covering” of reality–using makeup (blush), or emotions/expression (blues), or confidence (lights), or refinement (grace) to mask your genuine identity.
“Here is where I put my trust
If you tell a lie enough
You can’t pick it from the truth
It’s been of tremendous use”
“But there are shades you can’t replace
With blush or blues or lights or grace”
“If I were really alive, could I
Make it through every day dreaming?”
