This piece is inspired by “Flowers” from the Broadway musical Hadestown. The pair of necklaces embodies the themes of duality and memory. Sung by the character Eurydice, the song is filled with both anger and sadness as she reflects on Hades’ deceit and how he tricked her into coming to the underworld. She desperately tries to hold on to the slipping memory of her old life, but finds herself failing. The tap-and-die screw elements of this piece allow for the two versions of the necklace to be interchanged on the chain, symbolizing duality, sacrifice, and change.
“Dreams are sweet
Until they’re not
Men are kind
Until they aren’t
Flowers bloom
Until they rot and fall apart”
“Flowers, I remember fields of flowers
Soft beneath my heel…
And then I turned away
Into the shade”
“Lily white and poppy red
I trembled as he laid me out”
